Each year 7th & 8th grade students have the opportunity to study about the black experience through history, culture, economy, politics and more. Students learn about a variety of movers and shakers throughout the black diaspora historically and in the present-day, starting from Africa and moving westward to the Americas. Students come to understand that they are learning about the black experience and the effect of society on blacks and their effect within and/or on society.

Using a variety of teaching tools (music, video, literature, non-fiction text and hands-on analysis, classroom debates and discourse); students have the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge that enables them to make text-to-text connections, text-to-world and text-to-self connections.
